My Fantabulous Drew-son

Fantabulous Friday
Before leaving Elmira Pond after Christmas, Drew shoveled our half-acre driveway twice, hauled firewood and refused to let me win at Scrabble just because I'm his mother-in-law (I will beat him fair-and-square one of these times). He is fantabulous.

My daughter Allison obviously knows this (she married him) and his mother Paula would whole-heartily agree (she raised him). He's lively, gentle and kind, a talented baker, a competitive Scrabbler, a dog-whisperer and he gives me cool rocks like my prized chunk of petrified wood the color of caramel and the size of a tea-cup poodle.

Allison and Drew are dual-income-large-dog-owners or DILDOs. Yeah, try explaining that one when asked, "Do you have grandkids?" Thus my heart is filled with nearly 200 pounds of large dogs in the fuzzy-form of mixed-breed huskies. Both are rescue dogs, and the kids invest daily time to walk and train their dogs despite their busy career-building schedules.

The LDs stayed at Elmira Pond while Drew, Allison and my youngest son Kyle all traveled back to Minneapolis. Several times a day, the LDs marched me out to the pastures to show me where the mice hide and, of course, play with the pink jolly ball. When Drew drove in yesterday, the fuzzy dogs pranced with excitement.

They know Drew is fantabulous.

Drew arrived in time to find that the weather had treated us miserably despite our luck at having missed the polar vortex. Drew experienced the extreme cold, having spent the past few weeks with his family in Minnesota where it is colder than Mars. We experienced snow, snow and snow.

It was so un-fantabulous, that Todd developed snow rage, yelling at the snow, the snow shovel and the driveway. Drew greeted the dogs, gave me a hug and set out to shovel, telling Todd he'd finish the rest of the driveway. Five minutes later he conceded to enough of the driveway to turn around the car.

Together they finished enough to clear a path to the road and the garage. It was such a fantabulous moment, to get help when we needed, that an eagle flew overhead and after it's passing the rays of sun broke through. A movie-ending moment.

Before Drew left this morning, he piled the LDs' dog beds on atop the other and our GSP stretched out upon the heap, looking at Drew as if to say she thought he was fantabulous, too.

    1. Nothing like a polar vortex to make you appreciate 20 degrees (above).

    1. I have thought about investing in a bigger, thicker bed for Bobo as she gets older, but looks like I just need to double up!

  6. Fantabulous photos, as always, Charli. And I loved your delightful story of Drew and the dogs. Tell Drew I could probably beat him at Scrabble! I'm a self-proclaimed expert...LOL. Early in my new marriage/new motherhood years my neighbor, another SAHM with very small children, and I spent an entire year playing scrabble every single afternoon (Monday through Friday) while our little tots napped. We became so good at it that our hubbys refused to play with us anymore (as they NEVER won). :-)
